You do not have to travel to far back in time to see that most kitchen designs were what we call today “cookie cutter kitchens.” Each kitchen design consisting of a stove, fridge, sink, and dishwasher and the remaining areas filled in with cabinet boxes and Formica countertops without much thought given to design.             Today in our fast paced high tech lives our kitchen has become much more than just a place for meal preparation. When considering the kitchen design of today, it is critical to hire a trained professional who has the knowledge to ask the right questions and listen to the customers needs and desires in order to meet and exceed the customers’ expectations.             Today many things need to be considered, everything from multiple prep stations, a place to sit and pay bills or do homework. A good professional kitchen designer will follow the guidelines set out by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and also the local building codes which cover such things as the required distance between a cooking surface and a combustible surface.             Many “kitchen designers” can produce a kitchen design that works, but a qualified professional will produce a kitchen design that works specifically with you in mind. If you are dealing with someone who is not communicating with you and asking how you use your kitchen, it is time to seek out a true professional.             To find a professional kitchen and bath company, look for a company that is a member in good standing with national organizations such as the NKBA, the SEN Design group, and local Chamber of Commerce. Also take into consideration the number of years of operation, reputation, and extensive referral list.
